Hi! I'm Mike, a gaffer.
My interest in the moving image started when I was just a kid. I would grab my dad’s old and chunky camera and just film stuff. Always wondering why my “films” never looked as good as the ones I saw on TV. I always wondered, “Why do films look like films?”
Fast forward to the early 2010s, the DSLR revolution was changing the filmmaking world forever, and I (like many of my now colleagues) dipped my toes into the rough waters of shooting a stills camera.
It took some time before realizing that holding the camera itself was maybe not for me, but maybe lighting was. Step by step I learned about the craft of lighting, dimming, cutting, bouncing, diffusing, etc. And the more I learned, the more I realized that lighting has a huge impact on the final image. I finally had my answer to why a film looks like a film.
And here we are today, driving across the country and beyond in my lighting truck to work on all kinds of projects. From small to big and elaborate.
Every shoot is an adventure, and my lighting journey so far has taken me to the most interesting people, places, and projects. Here’s to many more!
